Fuel Soccer Talk: Vela strikes again for LAFC: Happy Derby Day; Seattle hosting Borussia Dortmund

It’s Derby Day in Manchester – just sayin!

Vela strikes twice in LAFC’s impressive win over Sounders FC

Carlos Vela, who now has a league-leading 10 goals, scored twice in Los Angeles Football Club’s 4-1 thrashing of Seattle Sounders FC on Easter Sunday at Banc of California Stadium.

Vela’s first came via a toe poke in the 12th minute, then the other arrived in the 55th minute upon rounding Stefan Frei.

Eduard Atuesta and Mark-Anthony Kaye absolutely were dominant all night for the home team, combining for one goal and four assists.

While Vela’s shots were quick and perfectly placd – and with plenty of pace behind them – the assists also were simply beautiful. Vela is playing at an extremly high level and so are the guys getting him in position to score.

It’s beautiful to watch!

Which of his two goals was more impressive (and what about the passes)?

Happy Derby Day – Let’s go CITY!!!!

I admit it – I’m a late comer to the Premier League. My brother is a big fan (Liverpool)! Several of my friends (Manchester United) have been hooked since we were in high school (around the Born in the USA tour) but I just never tuned it. That all changed when I watched “All or Nothing Manchester City” on Prime. Ever since then it’s been ALL Manchester City, all of the time. I haven’t missed a game since November and I will forever kick myself for allowing so many years to pass without getting involved. And I am fully involved.

I already have two City jerseys, two City jackets (OK, my mother-in-law sewed a patch onto an existing jacket but it still counts), a City hat and a City scarf. I mean what’s not to like? Pep Guardiola, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, John Stones. While they always seem to be hurt, I even like Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany. I think Kyle Walker is a little overrated – although I thought that about Leroy Sane but I’m warming up to him.

Why do I bring this up? Well, most people know why. Today is my first Derby Day and I’m so excited. A win today will almost wash the bad taste in my mouth from the Champions League nightmare of last week (Yes, I blame Walker). While I do like the Class of 92 – especially their Netflix show on their Salford City team – it’s going to be a great thing to see City in Old Trafford. Especially when WE leave with a victory. So happy Derby Day – Go City!!!

Who are you rooting for in the Manchester United-Manchester City match?

Seattle Sounders to host Borussia Dortmund for July friendly

The Seattle Sounders will host Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund for a friendly at CenturyLink Field on July 17, the club announced Tuesday. The match will come between two Sounders home games in MLS — July 14 against Atlanta United and July 21 against the Portland Timbers.

“We’re excited to welcome a storied club like Borussia Dortmund to CenturyLink Field for the first time,” Sounders COO Bart Wiley said in a statement. “Bringing world class opponents to Seattle has been a tradition for Sounders FC going back to 2009, and we couldn’t be happier to once again host one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Before then, however, we will enjoy cheering them on as they fight for the Bundesliga title over the next few weeks.”

Dortmund currently sit second in the Bundesliga, a point behind Bayern Munich with four matches left to play in their season. The club visited the west coast last year for a friendly with LAFC.

Will having a game like this be a distraction in the middle of the MLS season?
